What Can You Safely Do in the Days After Oral Surgery?

Posted on 9/15/2018 by Front Office
What Can You Safely Do in the Days After Oral Surgery? When you have oral surgery, you need time to recover. Immediately following the procedure and while you are still under the effects of the anesthetic, you will not feel yourself. One of the things we recommend is that you take it easy and rest after we discharge you.

Most people won't have the energy to do much other than lay in bed or sit in a comfortable recliner, following their oral surgery. You will be sore, and any sudden movement may make the pain worse.

Rest is Critical to Recovery from Oral Surgery

The main reason we recommend you rest and take it easy after your oral surgery is that strenuous activity can increase the risk of bleeding and dislodge the blood clot that forms to heal the site. While in most cases increasing the blood flow to the body through exercise is highly recommended, doing so after oral surgery is not one of those instances.

If you are an athlete, we suggest you abstain from physical activity for the first two or three-days following your surgery. Most patients gradually resume their routine by the end of the first week, but it depends on the person and the surgery's difficulty.

Other things you can safely do in the days following oral surgery are:

•  Reading
•  Watching TV
•  Working on your computer
•  Spending time with family
•  Listening to music
•  Playing games

You should take it easy after oral surgery, so you recover quickly. The first few days are the tougher ones when swelling of the face is at its worst. Once those days are over and provided you follow all our instructions, you can slowly resume your normal activities, but take it easy.

If you play sports, we recommend you stay away from this activity for about a week to give your mouth a chance to heal. The better care you take, the sooner you will be back to normal. Give us a call if you have any concerns about resuming your normal activities.
