Signs You Need to Remove Your Oral Piercing Once and For All

Posted on 5/15/2019 by Front Office
Signs You Need to Remove Your Oral Piercing Once and For AllBody modification has long been not only a cultural experience, but a form of self-expression for the individual as well. Beyond tattoos and body piercings, we see many patients who have found the trend for oral piercings appealing.

While we recommend that you not get an oral piercing, we recognize your right to choose and we are here to answer any questions you may have about your oral health and your new piercing. However, sometimes there comes a point when you as a patient may decide that it is time to remove the piercing for good. Let's look at some of the reasons you may reach that decision.

Saying Goodbye to Your Oral Piercing

If you have recurring infection and problems with your oral piercing, you may want to consider removing it for good. If your piercing is currently infected, please do not remove it on your own, this can cause the infection to become trapped beneath the soft tissue in your mouth. Make an appointment with one of our dentists and we will evaluate your situation and assist you.

You may also note that you have sustained damage to your teeth, especially from a tongue piercing. Chipping and cracking of the tooth enamel is very common with this kind of a piercing and if you are requiring excessive dental repair work, you may consider ditching the piercing.

Excessive drooling and nerve damage are also complications that can arise with an oral piercing that may prompt you to remove your jewelry for good.

Finally, if you do choose to keep your piercings, be sure that you keep all of your regularly scheduled cleanings with our office in addition to your daily brushing and flossing routine. A piercing is an additional responsibility that will require attention and upkeep and we can help you maintain good oral health with a piercing.
