How to Make Yourself a Better Candidate for Implant Surgery

Posted on 9/15/2019 by Front Office
How to Make Yourself a Better Candidate for Implant SurgeryOne of the best ways to replace lost, missing or damaged teeth is through dental implants. While many people assume that implants are an option for everyone, that is not always the case.

There are a variety of reasons a person is not a candidate for dental implants, but there are also some things a person can do that will make them a better candidate. Taking these steps could make a huge difference in what you can do to replace those missing teeth.

The Factors that Make a Good Candidate

Like anything, the best candidates for implants will have certain factors. While it is possible that a person that does not have all of most of these factors can still get implants, the process becomes more involved and the chances for failure go up.

The first thing a person who wants implants needs is healthy gums. Anyone with gum disease or significant plaque buildup on the gums should get this treated first before getting the implants. In addition to healthy gums, a person wanted implants needs enough bone tissue to put the implants in. This is often referred to as bone density. There are ways to build up bone tissue if there is not enough for the implants.

The next two factors are within the individual's control. Good oral health and oral health practices and patience are important assets for implants. If a person does not take care of their natural teeth, getting implants and not taking care of them will not help. They also need to have patience to allow the implants to completely heal and to manage their oral health during the recovery period which can last for six months.

Implants are a great option for people who are missing teeth and want a permanent solution. To become the best candidate for implants requires some time and effort, but the end result is worth it.
