Dental Implant Supported Dentures

Implant Supported Dentures at Pinnacle Oral Surgery SpecialistsTooth loss has serious consequences on your quality of life. The more teeth you lose, the more you suffer. Eating and speaking become difficult, if not near impossible. Your smile and your confidence can take a serious hit. Missing teeth need to be replaced. Traditionally, when it comes to losing all of your teeth, the answer has been dentures. Today’s technology has evolved traditional dentures. At Pinnacle Oral Surgery Specialists, we offer dental implant supported dentures, restoring the health and beauty to your smile.

Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures are removable prosthetic teeth. They consist of false teeth set into an acrylic gum-colored base. Based on molds of your mouth, dentures are supported by your gums and held in place with suction (when they fit properly). They need to be removed every night for thorough cleaning and left out, so your gums have a chance to rest. Over time, your jawbone changes shape, so dentures should be replaced approximately every 7 years. When they no longer fit correctly, they can slip out of place and rub your gums, causing denture sores and a significant amount of pain. Dental implants have allowed patients to experience a superior method of tooth replacement.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant supported dentures are designed to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. 4 to 8 implants are typically used, depending on your specific situation. There are a few different types of implant-supported dentures:
•  Fixed implant supported dentures. These dentures are affixed permanently in place with screws.
•  Bar retained dentures. A bar connects to your implants, and the dentures snap or clip into place. These implant supported dentures can be removed.
•  All on 4®. With this type of implant supported denture, your false teeth are supported on only 4 implants. This method is commonly used when you have suffered some bone loss and can help to avoid the need for a bone graft.

Getting Your Implant Supported Dentures

Getting implant supported dentures requires a surgical procedure and a few weeks to a few months of healing. Before surgery, you will be administered a local anesthetic. We can provide you with sedation, if necessary. We then start by making incisions in your gum tissue. Holes are drilled into the jawbone, based on your specific treatment plan. The implants are placed, and your gums stitched closed around the rods, leaving a small portion exposed above the tissue.

We will provide you with temporary teeth while you heal so that you can have some normal function at home. As you heal, the bone fuses to the rods, creating a stable support network for your new teeth. Regular visits will allow us to monitor your progression.

Once you have healed, the temporary teeth are removed. Abutments are placed, and molds are taken of your mouth. Your permanent teeth are fabricated. Once placed, your smile will be restored, as will all normal functions of your teeth.

Benefits of Implant Supported Dentures

Implant supported dentures offer several benefits:
•  More comfort
•  Improved eating and speech
•  No worry about slipping out of place or denture sores
•  Dentures do not need to be replaced every few years
•  The health, and shape of your jawbone are maintained
