Jawbone Loss and Deterioration

Reasons For Jawbone Loss and Deterioration

There are many reasons for jawbone loss and deterioration, some of which include:
•  Tooth loss and tooth extractions – Your natural teeth are embedded into the jawbone, and provide physical stimulation that keeps the bone healthy. When you lose this stimulation, your bone will atrophy within 18 months. The rate at which the bone deteriorates varies from case to case. Some patients will lose bone much faster than others.
•  Dentures and other restorations – Traditional dentures and bridges do not provide any direct stimulation to the underlying bone. In most cases, they rest on the gums or use other teeth for support. Dental implants are the only restoration that utilizes your bone and prevent future deterioration. The implant screw is surgically placed into the jawbone and provides the physical stimulation your bone needs to remain healthy.
•  Periodontal disease – Also known as gum disease, this condition gradually destroys the gum tissue, ligaments, and bones that support your teeth. The infection can eventually lead to tooth loss, the primary cause of bone deterioration.
•  Other dental infections – A chronic infection of a tooth may cause a fistula or abscess to form near the root of a tooth. In this case, the jawbone in that area may be resorbed as a result of the infection. To treat the infection, we may need to extract the tooth.
•  Misalignments – A misalignment in the jaw or teeth can create situations where the teeth do not provide adequate stimulation to the jawbone. Other issues, such as teeth grinding and TMJ disorders, can also lead to a lack of stimulation.
•  Trauma – Trauma to the face, jaw, and teeth can lead to loose or broken teeth, and eventually, the loss of stimulation. Your bone may also heal improperly as a result.
•  Tumors and development deformities – Benign facial tumors may not pose an immediate threat to your health. However, you may lose a portion of your jaw as they grow larger. Developmental deformities can also result in missing teeth and portions of the jaw.

Consequences of Tooth and Jawbone Loss

When you lose a tooth or experience jawbone deterioration, you are susceptible to some unfavorable conditions. For one, your remaining teeth can drift, loosen, or become misaligned. You may also experience a collapsed facial profile and limited lip support. Without the proper support, difficulty speaking and communicating is a common occurrence.

Others may experience jaw pain, facial pain, and headaches. Poor nutrition may be a result of the inability to chew painlessly. You may also notice skin wrinkling around the mouth.

Treatment of Jawbone Loss and Deterioration

Pinnacle Oral Surgery Specialists offers a variety of bone augmentation procedures to treat and prevent deterioration in the jaw. When we extract a tooth, we can perform a socket preservation immediately after the procedure. During a socket preservation, the dentist will place bone graft material directly into the empty socket. This will temporarily halt the process of bone deterioration while maintaining the original size and shape of the socket.

We also perform other bone graft procedures to restore your jaw in preparation of a dental implant. This may be crucial for patients with extensive tooth loss, or those who already wear a denture. Bone grafting allows us to build up healthy bone, and proceed with restorative procedures that may have otherwise been impossible.
