Are You Afraid?

Fear of the dentist is fairly common. Whether you’ve had a bad experience in the past with a dental visit or you suffer from an anxiety disorder, you may be feeling a bit apprehensive about your next trip to the dentist.

Some Ways to Overcome This Fear Include:

  • Meeting with your dentist – Getting to know your dentist beforehand can be an effective tool to conquer anxiety about impending visits. Some of your fear might stem from a fear of the unknown and getting to know the dentist as a person might help to quell some of the mystery.
  • Ask about bringing noise cancelling headphones – With the permission of your dentist of course, consider bringing headphones with you to blot out the noise of the dental instruments. Sitting in the dental chair and hearing the motors of some of the instruments could be the root of your fears. So instead try listening to some relaxing tunes to put you at ease.
  • Be honest – Honesty is always the best policy. Let them know you have a fear of seeing the dentist. Dentists see patients of all ages and with as common of a fear as fear of the dentist is they may have their own tried and true remedy for helping you conquer your fear.
  • Ask about pain management options – Fear of pain is natural. If you’re afraid that your next visit is going to hurt let the dentist know and ask about any pain remedies they have available.

Dental Sedation

Rockwall Oral Surgery offers a spectrum of dental sedation options for patients as well. If you know overcoming fear of the dentist isn’t going to happen for you nitrous oxide, oral sedation and IV have been very effective for some people and allowing them to get the dental attention they need without all of the panic.

It might not even be fear that keeps you away from the dentist. Maybe you can’t sit still, are extra sensitive to pain, have a bad gag reflex or are just nervous for a specific upcoming procedure. In any of these cases dental sedation may be a good fit for you as well.
