Did You Say Bone Graft Surgery?

Do not panic! Bone grafting is usually used as a prerequisite for other oral surgeries. However, with Rockwall Oral Surgery, there is no need to worry. If you have been told you need bone graft surgery, it is just part of the procedure and a pretty common remedy we often use. We will tell you all about it, so keep reading to learn more!

What is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is when we transplant bone from a “donor” source to a recipient site, but in this case, it will be beneath your gum line. Your jawline can weaken and thin out over time, making some dental procedures riskier or not at all possible. Bone graft surgery makes it possible to build that strength back up in a few different ways.

  • The most common is moving bone from one section of your jaw to another.
  • If your jaw is not an option, we can take it from somewhere else on your body. We try to use your hip or tibia because these have bone-growing proteins that we are looking for to create a successful bone graft.
  • Also, you can get a graft using a synthetic, man-made substance, which bonds and fuses well with your bone promoting growth.

We will discuss all options because moving forward and making sure you are comfortable with what needs to be done to pursue your restoration. We want everything to go as planned and ensure that you feel relaxed during the entire process. Rockwall Oral Surgery has such procedures to make each patient feel safe and trust our practice will guide them into the right decision.

Build Strong Bones with Grafts

The process is simple. You will be administered an anesthetic in both the donor and the recipient site.

Then, we incise the gums exposing the bone that needs to be reinforced.

Furthermore, we will take the donated bone and attach it to the already existing bone.

Next, we will lay a catalyst material over the area to promote bone growth and healing.

Lastly, we will close up the area and send you home with recovery instructions.

It is recommended you take the time to recover and follow your instructions because you will need to move forward with your other procedures. We are here to help you and make sure everything goes smoothly. You should trust that bone graft surgery is essential and scary because it can only help you and get you on the road to a healthier mouth!
