Ease Your Fears With Dental Sedation

Fear of the dentist, or dentophobia, is when an individual feels extreme nervousness or anxiety surrounding the dentists and dental offices. For many, this fear may stem from a bad experience they had in the past. Additionally, their fear could result from a fear of needles or other medical tools. With dental sedation, dental patients can feel at ease in the dental chair.

Sedation levels range from minimal sedation to general anesthesia. During minimal sedation, a patient is awake but relaxed. A patient with moderate sedation will be awake but very tired. During this level, a patient may not remember everything, and they might slur their words. During deep sedation, a patient is on the brink of consciousness. Although they might fall asleep, if a patient falls asleep during deep sedation, they can be easily awakened if needed. Lastly, general anesthesia is when a patient is unconscious during the entire procedure.

The safe and effective sedation options we offer at Rockwell Oral Surgery include:

  • Nitrous oxide
  • Oral sedation
  • IV sedation

Types of Dental Sedation

One type of sedation is nitrous oxide. This type of sedation is also known as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide allows the individual to remain awake during the procedure but in a state of relaxation.

Another type is oral sedation. Called “conscious sedation” as patients are at ease and comfortable. Patients using oral sedation typically will take a pill, sometimes one the night before and one the day of the dental procedure. In addition, individuals may not remember anything about their visit to the dentist with oral sedation.

The final form of dental sedation we offer is IV sedation. IV sedation consists of deep sedation and general anesthesia. The sedative is delivered directly into the bloodstream for immediate results. Since individuals will be under a deep sedative or anesthesia, they will need to have another person drive them to the dentists and back home.
