Jaw (Orthognathic) Surgery: Why and How?

Overbites, underbites, and maybe even uneven teeth are all such frustrating dental problems to tackle! But did you know that there may actually be a solution to those problems?

Orthognathic surgery covers all different kinds of procedures, from wisdom tooth extraction to facial reconstructive surgery. But what exactly is orthognathic surgery and how does it work?

What Is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic Surgery, or Corrective Jaw Surgery, is a pretty complex form of surgery because it is fully a reconstruction procedure. Orthognathic surgery is often needed when the jaw and teeth don’t lineup correctly.

Repositioning the jaws so that the teeth meet correctly helpt to improve the jaw joint and helps with chewing, improvement of speech, breathing, sleep apnea, and the overall facial structure aesthetics.

Why Orthognathic Surgery?

When there are issues with your jaw, its alignment, or the alignment of your teeth, it can heavily impact your day-to-day life. You may find that eating can be difficult, maybe even painful. Speaking and sleeping can be disrupted. If no other treatments have helped, orthognathic surgery may be the next step toward solving these issues.

The surgery can be used to correct a variety of issues including:

  • Open bites
  • Overbites and underbites
  • Impacted teeth
  • Chronic jaw pain
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Facial trauma
  • If you have had braces to straighten your teeth, but you are still experiencing issues with your jaw

How Is Orthognathic Surgery Performed?

Before you receive orthognathic surgery, Rockwell Oral Surgery will conduct a thorough examination of your mouth to ensure that surgery is the best option. Along with a visual exam, we will also take images of your mouth, such as x-rays, CT scans, and an MRI. Once surgery has been determined to be the best course of action, we can develop a treatment plan.

The length of the surgery depends on how much work needs to be done. In general, it ranges from one to several hours. We will make incisions, which provide access to the bone. From there, we can add bone, remove bone or reshape it by setting or stabilizing your jaw.
