Sedation for Dentistry Tips

Sedation for dentistry procedures is used to keep you comfortable. It is highly beneficial for patients with dental anxiety or undergoing a lengthy procedure. Our sedation options are Nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous sedation (IV). All our sedation options are safe and will help you get through your procedure. We use sedation to calm you down and relax your body so you can get the work done on your teeth that need to be done. If you have any questions about our sedation options, feel free to reach out, and we will help you understand our process.

Who is Sedation for Dentistry for?

Many procedures can benefit from sedation, which is why we recommend using a sedation method. A few important ones to mention:

  • Dental anxiety.
  • A fear of visiting the dentist.
  • An overly sensitive gag reflex.
  • A fear of needles.
  • Extreme teeth sensitivity.
  • Feelings of claustrophobia while in the dental chair.
  • Decreased sensitivity to local anesthesia.
  • Difficulty controlling movements.
  • Special needs (including physical, cognitive, or behavioral).

Advantages of Sedation During A Procedure

We use sedation to keep you calm and in your chair throughout the procedure. When you are under sedation, we can get more work done, which means you will be able to have fewer visits in the future. With this, many people have such bad dental anxiety that they tend to avoid a visit altogether. However, sedation can help you get the oral care you need!

Recovery Coming Out of Sedation for Dentistry Procedures

A recovery time is going to vary. It all depends on how long you were under sedation, how long your procedure was and what you had done. In general, people react differently depending on how they react to medications. For some, it takes 15 to 30 minutes, and they can drive themselves home. But most will need a ride home and about 24 hours to recover from the sedation.

Work/School

Depending on the type of sedation you choose, you will decide how much time you need to recover. For some, it will take a day or two to get back on their feet, and others can go back to work or school. We will also provide post-procedure notes to help you better understand how much time you need before returning to regular daily activities.

Driving

It is best to have someone come to your appointment with you just in case you are not ready to drive yourself home. Any sedation you choose can make you feel out of it for a few days, and it is best to be prepared with a ride home.

Eating

You will be able to eat right after your appointment. However, most patients like to wait until the numbness wears off. It is best to start with liquids or something light and work your way up to a full meal.

We will provide you with a list of foods you can and cannot eat due to the type of procedure you had and what type of healing process you will encounter.
