Sedation Options For Oral Surgery

It is normal to feel uneasy about oral surgery, even if you know exactly how the surgery works and how much it will benefit you. Sedation options can help you relax for your appointment and help your surgery go smoothly. Let’s explore your options to make your experience more comfortable.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking medication by mouth. We provide you with a prescription, and you take the medication an hour before your scheduled procedure.

Since oral sedation can make you sleepy, you should arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after your appointment.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

When undergoing a complex procedure, your surgeon will provide IV anesthesia to make you sleep through the surgery. The medication is delivered directly into your bloodstream, so it goes to work right away. This sedation will ensure that you do not feel any pain or discomfort throughout the procedure.

Like oral sedation, the effects linger and you could feel groggy, so you will need to have someone with you at your appointment who can drive you home.

Nitrous Oxide Gas

Also known as laughing gas, it is one of the mildest and shortest-lasting sedation options. This makes nitrous oxide gas ideal for simple oral surgeries.  It is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through your nose which will likely make you feel happy and relaxed while under sedation.

Nitrous oxide gas is a good sedation choice if you plan to drive yourself home, as it wears off more quickly than oral sedation.
