What is A Dental Implant?

If you have missing or failing teeth, you understand how difficult everyday activities can become. Whether it is a restriction to eating the foods you love, the feeling of a diminished self-esteem due to an incomplete smile, or a change to your facial appearance, tooth loss has consequences that can last a lifetime if not addressed. Luckily, Dr. Kevin Pollock and Rockwall Oral Surgery offer the gold standard solution to missing teeth—dental implants.

Dental implants are a lifelike tooth replacement that mimic both the appearance and function of natural teeth. With a natural looking crown attached to an implant post, patients are able to enjoy a complete smile again and enjoy virtually complete use of their mouth again. Better yet, with dental implants, you can expect them to last the rest of your life with proper care and maintenance.

The Parts That Make up an Implant

Dental implants are essentially made up of three unique parts; the implant post, an abutment, and the dental crown. While there are other implant options, like All-on-4®, Teeth in a Day, and implant supported dentures, we are simply looking at what makes up an individual dental implant.

  1. The Implant Post: The dental implant post is a titanium screw-like post that is surgically inserted into the patient’s jaw bone. This post is biocompatible and will fuse with the bone, creating a firm hold within the mouth. This post essentially acts as a natural tooth root and is the foundation for the rest of the dental implant.
  2. The Abutment: This little piece is easy to overlook as it is almost never seen. The abutment is attached to the implant post and sits just above the gum line. This essential piece is what connects the implant post to the dental crown.
  3. The Dental Crown: The crown is the part of the tooth that is visible within the smile. This helps you bite, chew, and speak. Our dental crowns are created to blend in seamlessly with your natural tooth color and when in place, won’t look like a false tooth at all!
