Sedation Dentistry: Comfortable Oral Surgery Without the Stress

For many patients, the thought of oral surgery comes with a wave of anxiety. Whether it’s a routine extraction or a more complex procedure like dental implant placement, fear of pain or discomfort can become a barrier to treatment. Fortunately, modern sedation dentistry offers safe, reliable options to make your experience as stress-free as possible.

At Rockwall Oral Surgery, Dr. Kevin Pollock and his team provide several levels of sedation to help patients feel calm and comfortable, no matter the procedure.

Why Consider Sedation Dentistry?

Dental anxiety is more common than you might think. For some, it stems from past experiences. For others, it’s a fear of needles, loss of control, or the sounds and sensations of a surgical environment. Sedation dentistry is designed to:

  • Ease anxiety and stress
  • Minimize physical discomfort
  • Make longer procedures feel faster
  • Help patients with strong gag reflexes or difficulty sitting still

Most importantly, sedation helps patients get the care they need, without putting it off due to fear.

Types of Sedation Available at Rockwall Oral Surgery

Dr. Pollock offers a range of sedation options tailored to each patient’s comfort level and medical history:

1. Local Anesthesia

Used for nearly all procedures, local anesthesia numbs the specific area being treated. It prevents pain at the surgical site but doesn’t affect your awareness or relaxation level.

2. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Ideal for patients with mild anxiety, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. It creates a calming, floating sensation without putting you to sleep. The effects wear off quickly, so patients can typically drive themselves home afterward.

3. Oral Sedation

Taken as a pill before the procedure, oral sedation helps you feel deeply relaxed but still awake. You’ll remain responsive but may have little memory of the procedure afterward. A responsible adult must accompany you to and from the appointment.

4. IV Sedation

This option is often recommended for more complex surgeries or patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety. Administered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation allows Dr. Pollock to control the level of sedation throughout the procedure. You’ll be in a dream-like state and may not remember anything about the surgery. As with oral sedation, someone must drive you home and monitor your recovery.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Yes. Sedation dentistry is a proven and safe practice when administered by trained professionals. Dr. Pollock and his team review each patient’s medical history and current medications to determine the safest and most effective sedation plan. Throughout your procedure, your vital signs are closely monitored to ensure safety at every step.

What to Expect Before and After Sedation

Before your appointment, you’ll receive specific pre-op instructions based on the type of sedation being used. These may include fasting, pausing certain medications, and arranging for a driver.

After your procedure, you’ll rest while the sedation wears off. Most patients feel groggy or sleepy for a few hours, and it’s important to take it easy for the rest of the day. You’ll also receive detailed post-op care instructions for a smooth recovery.
